Paolo UCCELLO - Saint George Slaying the Dragon

1430-35, Oil on panel, 131 cm x 103 cm

Study of an emblematic work from the collection of Nélie and André Jacquemart in anoxia”

Acquired by Nélie Jacquemart, this work has since been exposed in the Florentine room of the Parisian museum.

At the bequest of the conservator, Arcanes effectuated an initial series of analyses consisting of a series of macro photographs in normal light, infrared reflectography, and UV on the panel painted by Paolo Uccello.

This imagery campaign, in high definition, gave the necessary graphic documentation for the material study and the techniques of the painter. A certain number of phenomena intrinsic to the technique and related to the material history of the work were brought up to date. A second phase of analyses (radiography, UV, FCIR, normal light) was conducted at C2RMF Versailles.

The work presents some overpainting, the largest of which is along the neck of the horse. Despite a good overall state of conservation, the multiple layers of varnish and old proteneic layer obscuring the presentation of the work with a grey film.

The work benefitted from a grime clean, varnish removal, re-integration, and a re-varnish. Concerning the support, the work was placed in a climate-controlled box by Jonathan Graindorge Lamour and the frame was restored by R. Merlo.

The restored work was revealed to the public at the Jacquemart André Museum for the Legion of Honour Ceremony held for Cinzia Pasquali and historian Jean-Pierre Babelon.
